I have worked in the aerospace industry for about 17 years, currently as a Staff Engineer designing production test systems for military and civil aircraft equipment. I have led that work for roughly 13 years. Day to day it covers test rig hardware and software, the industrial networks the rigs sit on, machine data collection, and the security around all of it.
Outside work I build home automation hardware and software, and I release most of it as open source. A lot of the same problems come up: cheap sensors, unreliable radio links, message buses, and equipment that has to keep running when the internet is down. Some of it is listed below.
I shoot archery at my local club. I also take photographs, and spend a fair number of weekends at National Trust houses and gardens.
Production test systems for aerospace manufacturing
Operational technology and industrial networking
Cyber security for OT and test environments
Hardware design and embedded software, mostly C++ and Python
MQTT, Modbus and similar industrial protocols
Machine data collection
Most of my personal projects are home automation and embedded work. The ones worth pointing at:
everblu-meters-esp8266-improved reads water usage from Itron Cyble RF meters using an ESP8266 or ESP32 with a CC1101 radio, and publishes it to Home Assistant over MQTT. It also works as an ESPHome external component. This is the one other people actually use.
Home-Assistant-Configuration is my own Home Assistant setup, published in full.
Home-Assistant-RFLink-Gateway-ESP8266 bridges RFLink to Home Assistant over HTTP, running on a NodeMCU.
eaton-xstorage-home-api-doc documents Eaton's undocumented xStorage Home battery API. There is a Home Assistant integration built on top of it.
The rest are on my GitHub profile.
